CBG Basics

The recent legalization of hemp has brought cannabidiol (CBD) to the public eye as well as its many potential benefits. However, do you know about cannabigerol (CBG) and if so, what do you know about it? Today, we’re telling you everything you need to know about this powerful compound.

What is CBG?

CBG is the acronym for cannabigerol, one of the 110 known cannabinoids naturally found in the cannabis plant. Like CBD, CBG is non-psychoactive — meaning it won’t get you high —  and interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system like CBD and THC do:

  • CB1 receptors primarily affect the nervous system and brain.
  • CB2 receptors interact with the immune system.

Though CBG interacts with our bodies in a similar fashion as CBD and THC do, it provides a variety of different benefits.

The “Stem Cell” of Cannabinoids

CBG is essentially like the “stem cell” of the cannabinoid family: CBG has the potential to turn into CBD or THC. CBG is converted into one or the other compounds during weeks six, seven, or eight of the flowering cycle; as a result, the plant’s flower is usually harvested during this time period if more CBG is to be enjoyed. It is usually found in trace amounts, but some hemp plants are cultivated to produce more CBG compounds than others.

What Are the Benefits of CBG?

CBG has non-psychoactive properties like CBG and reacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in a similar way as CBD does. However, CBG is different. CBG is considered a minor cannabinoid, but don’t let that fool you — CBG is powerful!

CBG . . .

  • Has anti-anxiety and anti-depressant properties
  • Is a THC inhibitor
  • Increases dopamine levels
  • Could provide anti-fungal properties
  • Promotes healthy sleep, mood, and appetite
  • Is considered a GABA uptake inhibitor
  • Can act as a muscle relaxant
  • May be a possible treatment for glaucoma
  • Could be a potential cancer fighter
  • Could decrease inflammation associated with IBS
  • Could protect the neurons affected by Huntington’s disease.
  • And more!

Like CBD, the list continues to grow for CBG’s potential benefits for both proactive and reactive healthcare.

Should I Take CBD or CBG?

With all the potential benefits of each, it may seem difficult to decide which you should take. However, it isn’t about which you should take but how to get the most benefit out of your cannabis products. Let us explain.

The Entourage Effect

When cannabis products are taken together they tend to enhance the benefits that each provides. This quality is called the entourage effect. When CBD and CBG are used together, you may experience more benefits related to inflammation, glaucoma, and cancer. In the same way, when CBD and THC are combined, greater pain relief may be experienced along with a myriad of other benefits.

How to Experience the Benefits of the Entourage Effects

To receive increased benefits from your cannabis products, most of the time, it isn’t about buying multiple sources of these products, but it is about the quality of the cannabis products you are investing in.

Full-Spectrum Cannabis Products

Not all cannabis products are created equal. The processing of cannabis can greatly affect the benefits that you may experience.

Full-spectrum cannabis products – Full spectrum means that all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other phytonutrients have been left in the cannabis product.

Broad-spectrum cannabis products – A product categorized as a “broad-spectrum” means that it is like the full-spectrum product, but all traces of THC have been removed. Within hemp-based full-spectrum products, there are always trace amounts of THC. However, these amounts are not high enough to be intoxicating.

Isolate cannabis products –  Isolate products means that the product has been processed to only have the particular compound (for example, like CBD) in it — all other cannabinoids and terpenes have been removed.

What Should I Choose?

To get the most out of your CBD or CBG products, you need to choose a product that works for your needs. Full-spectrum products are usually recommended as they can allow you to experience the entourage effect. However, broad-spectrum can provide a variety of benefits all without having to worry about THC. Isolate products guarantee a certain concentration of a particular compound. Choosing a product is entirely up to you.

How to Enjoy the Benefits of CBG

There are a variety of ways to enjoy the benefits of CBG and choosing the product for you depends on your preferences and the benefits you would like to experience. The variety of CBG products that you can choose from include:

  • CBG vape and other CBG vapor products
  • CBG oil
  • CBG cream
  • CBG pain relief

You can also experience the benefits of CBG in full-spectrum CBD products as well. However, if you are looking for the specific benefits of CBG, be sure to look for specific CBG products. Before you decide to include CBD or CBG in your health care regimen, we recommend that you seek the counsel of your primary care physician and never take CBD or CBG in place of your prescribed medication.
